Whether you’re new to list-building or have been doing it for years, one thing that you need to focus on is proper list segmentation.
If you have been list-building for a while, it’s probably VERY worthwhile to go back and correct problems like LACK of proper list segmentation.
Just acknowledge that the better results you will get from proper segmentation will provide you with a MUCH more responsive list, and MANY times more sales in the future!
You don’t want your list to go stale because you hit your list members with so many diverse topics that they simply tune you out! (I’ve been there, done that!)
You don’t want to put all of your subscribers on ONE list, you want to segment them so that you only send them offers that you know that they should be interested in.
If you do for some reason keep a “master list” then this would be one that you should probably broadcast to very rarely, and you should also keep segmented lists. This is fairly easy to do with some autoresponders, but can be a tremendous learning curve for some.

Your subscribers will actually look forward to your emails since they know that you offer them useful information (to include product recommendations).
If you communicate with them about problems that they have already shown you that they are interested in solving, they WILL read and respond to your emails.
